Want to create content, but not sure where to start?
This course will help you narrow it down and pinpoint exactly what it is that interests you. We’ll cover: how to find your niche, what is self-branding, how to build your own unique brand, how to find your target audience, how to optimize your content to fit your target audience.
Are you ready? Let’s get started.
There is so much content on so many different platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, your personal website, blog, or whatever you name it. It is now very easy to find high-quality and high-value content for which the topics interest you. By the way, do you really know what interest you? Or do you spend endless hours watching content without a true purpose? Well, then you are in the right place. Hi, my name is Jordan. I’m a French videographer. I mainly shoot corporate videos, and some of them land on YouTube.
Today, we are going to find out what interests you. Let’s be honest, you could speak about anything on your social media. After all, it’s your account. However, it will likely be limited to a small group of people, or maybe just your close friends, which is definitely a good start. but not enough if you’re ambitious and want to grow a community. Besides, not everything interests you. Does it? So you need to be smart. Or at least a bit smarter than the others. you need to be relevant In the field you want to be. Talking about something you’ve never experienced before or you don’t really know about does not look like a smart move, does it? You need to be relevant in your niche.
What is a niche? I’m glad to asked. Well, basically internet says the specialized segments of the market for particular kind of product or service. So you need to ask yourself a few questions to find out your niche. What do you want to express yourself about? Then, What do you like? What actually gets you excited in the morning when you wake up? What topics are you passionate about? And then what do you spend endless hours talking about? Is it food? Is it astronomy? Is it math? tell me, but more importantly, tell yourself. My TV broke 15 years ago, I haven’t had a new one so far since I felt like YouTube was the new and only place to be. back then there wasn’t Netflix, Amazon Prime HBO or whatever. And what was great about YouTube is the fact that it was one of the first platforms where anyone could upload from anywhere and share his own stories. I don’t know how old you are. But trust me back then, great content creators were very limited. Today, there are plenty of them everywhere, delivering high-quality content on every continent. And I personally watch guys, such as Peter McKinnon from Canada, Peter Lindgren from Sweden, NorthBordern in Australia, or Niklas Christi from Germany, as I am in the niche which is filmmaking.
But I also watch a channel called Yes Theory. First, because I resonate with the message. but also because there is something common to all the channels I watch without a single exception – storytelling. They are all fantastic storytellers. And this is what makes me stay tuned to the channels. I freaking love stories. This is what interests me. I love their stories. And I figured that today, I also love telling mine. And these guys inspire my way of telling mine.
But back to you. Haven’t found your keywords yet? Who are you looking at? or listening to? Who do you admire? Have a look at your hobbies. Do you play music? Do you play golf? Do you sail? Look deep at what’s inside your mind. There is no shame in not finding what interests you right away. It can also be tricky since the more you look, the less obvious it gets. I found mine in my early 30s. So it does not matter how long it takes finding its place is a journey. And it might take time. Accept it, but never give up. Perseverance is the key. So try, fail, rise, and try again.
There are so many possible stories. As I said in my introduction, I shoot corporate videos, and let me tell you my story and why I feel at the right place. I didn’t do any film school. It was not in my plan after high school. It was not in my mind at all, actually. It never occurred to me. I studied engineering. I started my career in aerospace. Long story short, I really never felt passionate about my job. Good salary. Good social recognition, but not what I really wished for deep inside me. What is it? What was it? I asked myself these questions without being able to answer. I wasn’t going anywhere. But eventually, it happens. Filmmaking for corporations did not appear as it was the thing right away. It’s just the more I was going deep into these crafts, the more I felt happy, at my place, and relevant in my field.
Why? Because my rising love for telling stories that I mentioned earlier was meeting my love for science and technology. I understand what message companies want to deliver in the videos. why? Because I’ve been in their shoes. I can very easily relate and understand what is at stake for them – what value they have, what value they want to promote. My videos may not be the best in terms of video composition, equipment, and so on. But it’s part of the game. I could be better with a whole crew and high-end gear. But it’s not where I want to be. It’s someone else niche. I want to stay attractive, run and go, and make sure I reach the best ratio, value, money for the customers I work with.
I know what interests me. What about you? Hobbies, background, artistic taste? What do you have to say that others need to hear? Grab a pen. Make a list of things you like, things you care about, and things you’re definitely interested in. I hope you guys learned something from this video and that you now have some tools and ideas on how to find what interests you. I’ll see you in the next class. Bye.
Expressing yourself has never been as accessible as today, pretty much anywhere in the world. That’s what we call UGC, User Generated Content. YouTube, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram – it takes about one minute to create an account and then you’re ready to roll. To tell stories, to tell your stories. But what stories? Well, then you are in the right place. Hi, in this video we are going to find out what you want to say.
Let’s say music is your cup of tea. What do you want to say about it? You’re a singer. Cool. Do you want to sing? Do you want to discuss singers? Lyrics? Do you want to talk about the process of songwriting? I don’t know. You tell me. there are so many ways you can deal with what interests you. You need to narrow down a slice of your niche to start with. At first, you might think and fear that you might have gone for an audience too small. But truly, this is how you’re going to succeed. Start small but relevant and then grow your audience. As you’re getting confident and legitimate. On YouTube, I’m in the filmmaking industry. Filmmaking is wide. Do I speak about gear? No, I don’t. Do I speak about the latest release from DJI Sony Canon? No, I don’t. Do I show how I edit? Not really. There are plenty of people doing it very well and this is not my thing. I just want to tell stories. And the more I tell stories, the more I grew my community, which likes my stories, my style, my edits. I just have to be consistent.
Make a statement. That’s the freedom of social media today. If you’ve got something to say, you’re free to say it out loud, but you must be 110% confident in what you say. People want to listen to leaders, people who are confident people who they can trust people who inspire people who seem legitimating their field. Trust your potential and build your confidence. You must have a faithful confidence in the value you bring to the world through your voice. You must commit. If you want to be controversial, then be controversial. But be at 110%.
You feel horrified at how humans are killing earth. You want to save the planet. You want to be a voice that rises among others. Then make your voice relevant. Make your content better than others. Be open-minded. Don’t be afraid to be the one who does the extra work, who steps up to stand out from the crowd, who pushes the boundaries, who steps aside from what everyone else is doing, who brings new information or at least another way of seeing things. you must be convinced that what you share has value and it’s worth it. Don’t be the plus one, be the one.
My edits are inspired by Peter Lindgren, Daniel Schiffer, and a bunch of other creators. Does it mean that what I do is already done by these guys? No, because my stories are personal. The way I Mix What I learned from those guys and my way of doing things is personal. Does it make my stories better than them? Certainly not. But it does make my stories unique. And this is the most important. would you rather watch a Martin Scorsese movie, or Quentin Tarantino’s or Christopher Nolan’s, or Woody Allen’s? obviously, to each their own, but nevertheless, you couldn’t say one is better than the others. They all have unique ways of making stories. One will play with your mind, another with your gut, another with your beliefs, another your reality, and so on. My point is once you know what interests you and what he wants to talk about, don’t be afraid of being different. Remember, to bring value. Doing the exact same thing as everybody else does, does not bring any value.
Never underestimate the power that you have in your hands and in your mind. Everyone has something to share. But not everyone is willing to spend days, months, years sharing the message until someone eventually hears you. And this my friends, is the beginning of your audience building. So tell me, what do you want to say to the world? I hope you guys learned something from this video. And thanks for watching. I’ll see you in the next class. Bye.
Do you wear Air Jordans? Are you a GaryVee entrepreneur? Do you use Mel Robbins Methods? All these are personal brandings that we are all familiar with. Why? Why would someone listen to you? How would you stand out and build your own brand too? Well then, you are at the right place. Hi, let’s find out what makes you unique.
Why would people look at you or listen to you in the first place? You have strong beliefs, cool stuff to share. But is it really enough to be successful? Here’s a clue: no, it’s not. It’s like a salesperson. What they sell is important. But if they don’t know how to sell it, it becomes pointless. The other way around, if you are the best seller, but what you sell is garbage then it won’t be sustainable. You need the combination of these two aspects. Besides, if you start well in your niche, and you manage to build your brand, build a charisma, build a strong personality, authentic and polarized – then you will be able to expand your audience so much beyond what you started with in the first place. Peter McKinnon has almost 6 million followers on YouTube. He started with filmmaking, but he has now expanded to so many businesses related to filmmaking, but not only. He is so meticulous. Now, a product stamped McKinnon means expensive, but high quality. Whether it’s a bag, an ND filter, jewelry, it doesn’t matter. He loves quality. He loves taking care of the customer experience. The result is every detail is thoughtful. That’s what his name is.
Self-branding is so important. It’s the foundation of your growth. Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, has almost 300 million followers on Instagram, and trust me, it’s not only fans of wrestling. He built a personality that became a brand and that is now in so many different businesses. You don’t buy a tequila. You buy a piece of The Rock. Do you know who has even more followers? Kylie Jenner. The most followed woman on Instagram. She’s like 24 something? She built an empire thanks to who she is. You don’t buy any cosmetics you buy a piece of Kylie Jenner. People buy from them and not from somebody else for what they embody – their personalities, their values, and this is what you need to work on.
Don’t think about what people need to hear. They don’t know it yet. Focus instead on how you deliver the message to them. You find your audience. You know what you want to say. You need to focus on delivery. Every great influencer, YouTuber, politician, has their own style. From Barack Obama to Martin Luther King to Mr. Beast or whoever you follow or get inspiration from. They did not get this level overnight. It’s a long process to build oneself up. It’s your personality, your face, your voice, your style that you’re going to promote.
Michael Phelps, who is the greatest swimmer of all time, said when he was competing for eight Olympic gold medals in Beijing to beat Mark Spitz, which was seven Olympic gold medals at this time, “I don’t want to be the next Mark Spitz, I want to be the first Michael Phelps.” And I believe that is a very powerful mindset to have and to carry throughout your journey.
The mindset here, that’s everything. Of course, he has always been inspired by other people, but he just wants to be himself. You feel that maybe what you want to say is not unique. And sometimes it is true. You can not bring new things to the world every single time. So you might feel like, why should someone else listen to you more than anybody else? People will listen to you because it’s you. Because you’re unique. Your DNA is unique. Your journey into life made you unique. It means that what you are going to say will also be unique. Maybe not the contents, but the way you will communicate it will.
This is why there are so many creators on social media. A lot of people you may follow in one specific niche might spread one common message. But you are, I know you are, you are going to watch every single one of them because they all have a unique way of telling theirs. Self-branding is not something that should scare you. If you mix authenticity with some personal details, it’s a good beginning. Your uniqueness might be your face, your size, your language, your accent, your body language, your editing style, your habits, your catchphrase, your design, your colors, your music. So many possibilities to be unique. So many possibilities to be you. Be yourself and you’ll already be unique. Mr. Beast, besides his content, has a very fast-paced edit, he always wears shorts and regularly his straw hat. Daniel Schiffer has its own unique edit style that makes him different from competitors. Zach King makes magic tricks in video using a mix of in-real-life techniques and edit techniques that nobody else is able to replicate. Sam Kolder, a famous filmmaker, also created a unique style of editing with complicated transitions, sound design, and personalized color grading. This is why these people have a big community. They are different from their competitors in the field.
Am I the best editor? No. Am I my best storyteller? No, I’m not. Do I have the best English accent? of course I don’t. Can I improve everything I just said? No doubt about it. But am I the best me? Yes. Because nobody else can be a better me than myself. All these flaws I have can become my advantage.Do I have a French accent? That’s a great way to remember me. Is my editing style different? Also, a great way to stand out. Make an omelet from all your scrambled eggs. Of course, it doesn’t mean that you cannot be inspired by somebody else. I would even say it can be one of the best ways to build yourself up. Get inspired, take a little bit of him, him, her. Mix it up, do it your own way. And this is nobody else than you.
Being unique, being you, does not prevent you from improving your skills either. Becoming a better storyteller, improving your speaking, will always help you to reach more people and help you assert yourself in your niche. I hope you know a bit more about yourself now – what value you carry and how you can differentiate yourself from other creators. Thanks for watching. I’ll see you soon.
My wife does not watch my content. I do not watch hers. Why? Why is that so? Well, let’s find out. Hi, in this video, we will investigate who you address your message to. Where do you live? What language do you speak? What country are you from? Who is your video intended for? To better target your audience, you need to know who you’re talking to by building the persona. who are they? Women, men, millennials, younger, older, English speaker, American, European, Asian? How can your content fit into your audience? When you build your brand there are some things you can choose freely. However, there are some you can’t. What I mean by you can’t is the fact that if your content is addressed to the Millenials, it must certainly be suitable for TikTok, Snapchat, or similar. Which means, for example, that your video should be in portrait for smartphone, instead of landscape. And really entertaining, since a young people watch a lot of videos. And to keep the focus it needs to be as such.
I will actually recommend knowing where your content will be uploading before starting anything. This way, You make sure to integrate from the very beginning the constraints that your audience indirectly sets. My audience is on Youtube. Brands I want to work with. In this case, YouTube is my portfolio. I talk to companies there and they can see my work instantly. My YouTube channel helps me reach out to clients worldwide. I can easily meet companies close to where I live. Just walk there or take my car, that’s it. But to expand my set of customers, YouTube becomes my number one tool. My other audience is the one that likes my style of videos. They’re actually my subscribers. They are also also on Instagram. That’s why I’m also on Instagram.
Now, how do you actually know your audience? Because after all, it might not be easy to know it in the first place. I mean, you speak about music. Then, how to say if it’s young, old, both, women, men… no idea! Not as straightforward as it sounds. There are tools that will help you to understand better who your audience is such as Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, or online service could be a beginning to have a first idea. You could also watch similar content from your competitors and have a look at the comments to see what kind of people follow and interact.
Targeting your audience is also knowing when your audience is available for your content. Your upload for young female America based? Don’t upload it at midnight as there won’t be anybody to watch your content. So, the main question are: what sex? How old? Where do they live? What language? What platform, social medias, they are on. You target companies, go to LinkedIn. Your niche is fun, make Instagram reels.
Don’t forget to also be selective in one specific social media. As for example, Facebook approaches three billion accounts. It’s almost half the planet, which means you will need to select the right page or group within this media. What kind of content is more appropriate for your audience? Short story, sketch, facecam, podcast, serious, fun, cinematic, rough, amateur scripted, improvised? How long? One minute, ten minutes, an hour? Should it be solo?
What budget you have may also have a huge impact on your audience. Some people enjoy seeing high-budget content with a lot of production value, while others will just enjoy watching a guy sitting at his home and filming himself with a phone. Once you answer all the above questions, you’ll have a basis to express yourself about something you like and you’re relevant for.
More than that, you’ll be unique. You’ll bring value to others. You will start at the right place and hopefully, you will be able to grow your community and expand to bring brand beyond what you ever imagined. I hope you guys learned something from this video. And thank you for watching. I’ll see you soon.
